Call for Papers or Presentations


This conference will focus on the African American History of Western Arkansas and the Indian Territory from early settlement to the Civil Rights Movement.  The conference is to provide a forum for discussing issues in African American History in anticipation of Black History Month. Scholars will discuss topics ranging from the first Fort Smith, US Colored Troops, Freedman Issues, American Colonization Society, Jim Crow Laws, and music and work songs.  Living Historians will portray some of the more compelling historical figures of the area. The conference is open to university faculty, students and independent historians.
