John Rogers died in 1859 after selling land along the Arkansas River to the federal government for the construction of the second Fort Smith in the 1830s and 1840s. Although he can't be credited with founding the military Fort Smith in 1817, he shares considerable responsibility for the second and for keeping the town alive in the interim period. He's also credited for laying out Garrison Avenue and owned much of the land inside the original boundaries of the city of Fort Smith.
