Merchants National Bank was founded in 1882, but wasn't located in this building on the northwest corner of North Seventh Street and Garrison Avenue until much later. It still occupies that corner as the Stephens Building, home to city offices. Merchants was merged with the multistate Regions Bank in recent years.
